Angels Finally Release Reynolds; 5 Potential Free Agents Protected

It took three months longer than second baseman Harold Reynolds hoped, but he finally got his wish Wednesday when he was released by the Angels.
Reynolds, exasperated by his lack of playing time during the season, repeatedly asked to be traded or released midway through the schedule. Reynolds, 33, batted .232 in 74 games and had 11 runs batted in.
“We didn’t see him coming back next year,” Angel General Manager Bill Bavasi said.
The Angels protected their five remaining potential free agents and put them on their 40-man roster, but sources say the Angels have interest in retaining only outfielder Bo Jackson, reliever Bob Patterson and infielder/outfielder Rex Hudler.
In other news, Rod Carew officially notified the Angels that he will return as their batting instructor, completing their coaching staff.
Also, minor league pitcher Paul Swingle, who was on the disabled list all season, was designated for assignment and removed from the 40-man roster.
