DANA POINT : City Asks Public Input on Use of Grant Funds

The City Council is calling for citizen input to decide how to spend federal housing improvement grant money.

Two public meetings have been scheduled to discuss and establish a list of community needs and projects for federal Community Development Block Grant funds.

The first session is Thursday at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 33282 Street of the Golden Lantern. The second meeting will be Oct. 6.

In addition to community-wide projects, the federal assistance program helps low-income families and individuals pay for home improvements.

“Our primary objective is to benefit low- and moderate-income families,” said Ed Knight, the city’s community development director. “This includes the development of decent, safe and sanitary housing and a suitable living environment, (along with) expansion of economic opportunities.”

Knight added that grants are available to meet “those needs of a particular urgency which may threaten the health and welfare of the community.”

Since it incorporated in 1989, the city has received $567,000 in federal block grant funds.

In particular, city officials said, they hope to see residents from the city’s two older sections, Lantern Village and Doheny Village, attend the meeting.
