Shubin to Start for Westlake

Senior Brian Shubin, who has played at five different schools in four seasons, has been named the starting quarterback for Westlake High’s game Friday night against Hart at Newbury Park High.
Senior Scott Spruill had started the Warriors’ first two games, passing for 375 yards and four touchdowns. Shubin also played in both games, passing for 153 yards and three touchdowns.
“I said I was going to use the nonleague games to make a decision and I haven’t given Shubin enough reps to make a decision,” Coach Jim Benkert said. “Spruill started two, and to be fair, I need to give Shubin a chance to start and face game conditions.”
Benkert said Spruill also will play Friday night. The third quarterback who had been in the running for the starting job, junior Steve Aylsworth, will likely remain at defensive back the rest of the season, Benkert said.
