Classical Music Month

Thanks to Lynne Heffley, Los Angeles is now aware that September is Classical Music Month, and she gave suggestions for good listening (“Classical Music Hits the Right Notes for Children,” Sept. 6).
But classical music needs everyone’s participation! Adults and children alike should celebrate by getting involved in some classical music. Join a choir, take up a new or neglected musical instrument, perform chamber music, provide lessons for someone, play a recording for a friend, listen to classical music radio, take a friend to the Philharmonic.
Rep. Sidney R. Yates (D-Ill.) got the proclamation through Congress. Let’s write to our representatives and request that our state reinstitute music programs in every school. Let’s demand support for federal arts funding on the level of every other civilized nation.
