Union to Renegotiate Package: The severance package remains an open issue, however, for the thousand or so union workers at Hughes in Fullerton.
The reason: In 1992, Hughes workers represented by the Carpenters Union voted down the severance package offered then, opting instead to take a higher company-paid matching contribution to their 401(k) savings plans. “That was a big mistake,” said one former union steward.
Given that vote in 1992, the Carpenters Union must now negotiate a severance package for its members. The union’s contract with Hughes expires in early November.
