OUTLOOK
Newport Harbor has reached the Southern Section playoffs 10 of the past 12 years, and will again challenge for a berth. The Sailors’ strength is defense, where they return six starters, including McDonough, who continues in the long line of standout linebackers, and Johnson, who has been impressive at cornerback. If Newport does struggle, it will probably be on offense, where the line is smallish--though physically strong--and rebuilding. Riggle and Johnson combined for only 25 carries last year. Lacking a tailback like the graduated Wade Tift (5.2 yards per carry), the offense will diversify, which puts pressure on Giordani to get the ball to Freeman, a big-time tight end and a three-year starter. Moureaux, a transfer from Kentucky, might be a key two-way starter.
