THOUSAND OAKS : Suspects in Attack on Deputies in Custody

Two suspected Thousand Oaks gang members who were arrested after several assailants threw beer bottles at Ventura County sheriff’s deputies remained in custody Monday in lieu of $1,000 bail apiece.

Neither of the deputies, Cindy Morales and Dan Hawes, was injured in the incident at 11 p.m. Saturday at the Warwick Apartments, 850 Warwick Ave., Detective Ernie Montagna said.

Arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon was Ernesto Villalpando, 22, of Thousand Oaks, Montagna said.

He said Alfonso Farfan, 19, also of Thousand Oaks, was arrested on suspicion of interfering with an investigation.

Both were to be arraigned today, Sgt. Al Moussa said.

The deputies, who are assigned to the gang detail in Thousand Oaks, had been working an area plagued by recent automobile burglaries when three men in a church parking lot adjacent to the apartment complex aroused their suspicion, Montagna said.

The three men then got into a car and drove to the back of the complex, where several suspected gang members began throwing beer bottles at the deputies when they confronted the suspects, the detective said.

Farfan, when ordered to stand still, used his fingers to simulate a gun that he pointed at Hawes and then said, “Bang,” the detective added. He said the suspect then took a swing at Hawes, but the deputy was able to handcuff him immediately.

The driver of the car, 26-year-old Crescencio Lizarraga of Thousand Oaks, was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, Montagna said.

He said Farfan had previously been deported to Mexico after several earlier arrests.
