BOXING : Borboa Makes Sixth Defense of IBF Title at Forum Tonight
- Share via
Julio Cesar Borboa, who emerged from obscurity last year to capture the International Boxing Federation super-flyweight championship, makes the sixth defense of his belt tonight at the Forum against undefeated challenger Harold Grey.
Considering his dominance of the super-flyweight division, Borboa (23-4, 21 knockouts), whose last outing at the Forum was a blistering fourth-round technical knockout of Jorge Luis Roman on April 25, is eyeing a move down to flyweight should he defeat Grey (16-0, 15 KOs).
The two most prominent fighters in the lighter divisions are light-flyweights Humberto (Chiquita) Gonzalez and Michael Carbajal. Borboa is hoping to meet one or both at flyweight.
“I feel at 112 (the flyweight limit), moving down to fight any of the great fighters, Chiquita or Carbajal, shouldn’t be any problem,” Borboa said. “I think that’s where the big money will be--at 112.
“The opportunity to fight at 115 (the super-flyweight limit) really came as a surprise. I’m really a flyweight.”
Also on the card, which celebrates Forum Boxing’s 12th anniversary, are two featherweight 10-rounders: Arnulfo (Chico) Castillo vs. Panchito Valdez; and Jesse Magana vs. Ericel Nucamendi.
