The Cal State Northridge football team has added an NCAA Division I transfer who is expected to contribute at defensive end, Matador Coach Bob Burt said Saturday.
Ken Freitas, who played at Claremont High, Citrus College and Utah State, was given his release by Utah State on Friday.
He is expected to play immediately for the Matadors, Burt said. Freitas, a senior, is 6-feet-5, 235 pounds.
“He’s a very good player,” Burt said. “He’ll fit in somewhere.”
The Matadors, who conducted their annual intrasquad scrimmage Saturday, open the season Sept. 10 at Boise State.
A pair of freshmen walk-on players left the team this week. Defensive back Tyrone Francis, a Reseda High graduate, was declared ineligible and linebacker Erin Christianson of Morton Grove, Ill., left for personal reasons, Burt said.
