Zoning Ordinances Protect Neighborhood

In the Aug. 7 “Real Estate Q&A;” column, Robert J. Bruss gave a response to an inquiry (“How to Sell Home With Illegal Apartment”) that in my judgment was irresponsible.
The writer asked about selling a home in a R-1 zoned area that had an illegal studio apartment. Their realtor had told them to correct the problem before trying to sell their home. The astounding comment made by Bruss was that the “realtor has a negative attitude. I wouldn’t list my home for sale with him or her.”
Is this the advice coming from the major Los Angeles newspaper when we are battling to prevent the deterioration of our neighborhoods? Zoning ordinances are made to help protect neighborhoods that are designated for single-family residences.
