BUENA PARK : Council OKs Funds for Historical Park

The city’s new historical district park has moved closer to completion with the City Council’s approval of a final budget of $683,000 for the project.
The district includes the First Congregational Church, the former Stage Stop Hotel and two houses.
The 1887 Whitaker-Jaynes house and an older squatter’s shack called the Bacon House were loaded on pneumatic dollies and moved from their old foundations on Manchester Boulevard to the district site on Beach Boulevard in early June. The historical park is across from the Civic Center Plaza.
Nearly $100,000 of the budget went to moving and rehabilitating the houses, which had been damaged in the January earthquake.
The bulk of the funds paid for the district’s land and will finance the extensive landscaping that will turn the half-acre lot into a gardenlike park, said Wes Morgan, director of recreation, parks and community services.
The park should be ready for visitors later in the fall.
