Florida made school history by becoming the first Gator team to be ranked No. 1 in the USA TODAY/CNN poll. USC and UCLA held down the 14th and 15th spots respectively.
The Gators apparently welcome the poll, which gave them a slight edge over last season’s No. 1 team, Florida State, with 17 first-place votes to the Seminoles’ 13. Florida had 1,416 total points to Florida State’s 1,402. The teams will meet on Nov. 26.
“That’s what you come to college for,” Gator defensive back Larry Kennedy said. “To be No. 1. That’s what we all dream about.”
Coach Steve Spurrier likes his team’s chances, saying, “I don’t know if we can hold it, but I would think our team is about as good as anyone around.”
Nebraska (1,375) was No. 3 while Notre Dame (1,362) and Michigan (1,302) were fourth and fifth. The Irish and Wolverines play on Sept. 10.
Arizona (1,037) was the highest ranked Pac-10 school at No. 8.
USC had 692 points and UCLA had 677.
