Three-sport standout Phil Fonua, a defensive lineman at Mira Costa High in Manhattan Beach, was in critical but stable condition Friday at Torrance Memorial Hospital after undergoing surgery Thursday for a ruptured aneurysm in his brain, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The 6-foot-2, 275-pound Fonua, preparing for his senior year, collapsed Wednesday during a workout in the Mira Costa weight room.
Fonua was named Southern Section Division VII co-player of the year last season after helping Mira Costa win its first section football title. He also was starting center on the basketball team and finished fourth in the shotput at the State track and field meet.
