Mark Kauffman, 71, veteran photographer who was the youngest ever to photograph a Life magazine cover. His subject was Eleanor Roosevelt, and Kauffman was 17. He worked for Life for 30 years, shooting more than 20 covers and dozens of photo features. He won the White House News Photographer Grand Award and the Photographer of the Year Award from Encyclopedia Britannica in 1952. The next year, Kauffman was selected to become the founding photo editor of Sports Illustrated. He was credited with designing and using a motorized camera and telephoto lens at ground level, revolutionizing sports photography. In the early 1970s, Kauffman was director of photography for Playboy. He later taught photography at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. On Friday in Pismo Beach.
