SAN SALVADOR — Twelve people were killed and 16 wounded when a hand grenade exploded as gunmen robbed peasants riding in a truck, police said Sunday.
One of the eight robbers shot and killed the driver Saturday when he accelerated and tried to flee, police Sgt. Ricardo Dubon said.
As the thieves were robbing the passengers, a grenade held by one of the bandits went off, Dubon said. It was not clear how many of the robbers died in the blast. The attack occurred near Nahuilingo in Sonsonate province.
