2 Firms Agree to Settle Hemophiliacs’ Suit: Under the proposed settlement, medical suppliers Baxter International Inc. of Deerfield, Ill., and French-owned Rhone-Poulenc Rorer Inc. of Collegeville, Pa., would pay a combined $140 million to $160 million into a fund for U.S. residents with hemophilia who became infected after they used blood-clotting products tainted with HIV and sold by the companies. The proposal needs court approval. Defendants Miles Inc., Alpha Therapeutic Corp. and the National Hemophilia Foundation did not participate in the settlement. The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago, alleges the defendants continued selling or promoting the products after they should have known that some of the paid donors of blood used to make the products were at high risk for HIV infection.
