A Venice High School math teacher has been named a finalist for the Jaime Escalante Mathematics Teacher of the Year Award.
Carol Lockett and 10 other finalists will receive $1,000 each during a reception Friday at the ARCO Tower in Downtown Los Angeles. The winner of the $1,500 teacher of the year award will be announced at the reception.
The award is sponsored by the Los Angeles Educational Partnership and the ARCO Foundation and has been given since 1989. Escalante taught math at a high school in East Los Angeles, and his success with students once considered underachievers was the subject of a feature film, “Stand and Deliver.”
