Huntington Beach wasn’t having one of its better matches against fourth-seeded North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake in the Division I quarterfinals Friday. The unseeded Oilers had lost the third and fourth games without much resistance, 7-15, 4-15. Finally, in the fifth game, they woke up. After trading side outs for about 20 minutes with a 4-3 lead, the Oilers put the match away, 15-3. Graves had eight of his team-high 28 kills in the final game. “I think our team realized that the season could have been over for us,” Grave said.
Other notables:
* John Bain, Foothill, won the Southern Section Division II pole vault, clearing 14 feet 6 inches.
* Keith Ginter, Fullerton, hit two home runs--his eighth and ninth of the season--in a 3-1 victory over Covina in the Division II playoffs.
* Fernando Machuca and Christian Fernandez, Mission Viejo, won two of three doubles as the Diablos upset Corona del Mar in Division I tennis.
* Terry Noe and Jin Park, Sunny Hills, each shot 72 at Canyon Country Club in Palm Springs to lead the Lancers to the Southern Section team title.
