The few times Amaya, from Van Nuys Birmingham High, played Mission Viejo Country Club this spring he struggled. His best score was 78. But Amaya played one of the most unexpected rounds of his life when shot one-under 71 in the first round of the State tournament. He came back to shoot 78 in the afternoon round and tied for medalist honors with Ventura’s Kelly Schlender, who also shot 71-78. Amaya’s performance helped Saddleback win the State team title. Amaya was selected as the Orange Empire Conference’s golfer of the year.
Other notables:
* Joe Fraser, Rancho Santiago, was six for six and drove in three runs as Rancho Santiago won two playoff games against Los Angeles Mission.
