The U. S. Air Force Phillips Laboratory has awarded a $22-million contract for the Airborne Laser program to a team headed by Rockwell International, which includes the company’s Rocketdyne division in Canoga Park.
The 33-month contract is for the concept designs of both an advanced-technology demonstrator and the fully operational weapon system. The weapon system, operated from an aircraft, will be capable of shooting at the speed of light to intercept and destroy far-off missiles.
Rockwell’s team also includes its North American Aircraft division and the Systems Development Center. Rockwell’s three business units will contribute senior program management, systems engineering, aircraft integration and laser expertise to the program.
