‘Illegal’ Addition Also Seems Illogical

Regarding the item in Robert J. Bruss’ column headed “Does Illegal In-Law Apartment Add Value?”:

It is ironic and stupid: You can have a game room, a family room or other area in which it is perfectly legal to keep a double sink with garbage disposal, a refrigerator, a bar to serve drinks and a hot plate to heat frozen hors d’oeurves for your guests. But if you put in a gas range, rather than an electric cooking appliance, you are breaking the law?
