Rwanda Gorillas Believed Unhurt

NAIROBI, Kenya — Rwanda’s rare mountain gorillas have remained unharmed despite a month of ethnic fighting in the Central African country, a conservationist said Friday.
There is no fighting in the forest of the Volcanoes National Park, which is home to the primates popularized in the Hollywood movie “Gorillas in the Mist,” said Jose Kalpers, coordinator of the International Gorilla Conservation Program.
There remain about 600 mountain gorillas in the world, about half of which range through volcanoes straddling Rwanda, Uganda and Zaire. The other half live in a park farther north in Uganda.
