LANSDOWNE, Md. — An elementary school was evacuated and dozens of people taken to hospitals Friday after a student dropped a jar containing a powdered dye in the school’s cafeteria, officials said.
When a custodian at Riverview Elementary School used water to clean up the substance, a gas cloud formed, a spokesman for the Baltimore County Fire Department said.
About 50 students and adults were taken to Sinai Hospital in Baltimore for observation, a spokeswoman said. One of the adults complained of difficulty breathing, but none of the others was expected to be admitted.
An unknown number of students were taken to other area hospitals.
Authorities said the spilled substance was dichloroindophenol, a dye used in laboratories. It was not clear what the student was doing with it on campus.
