Striking Workers Picket Zacky Headquarters: Employees from Zacky Farms’ Commerce processing plant picketed the poultry company’s El Monte headquarters to highlight their demands for safer working conditions and pay equality with other Zacky sites. About 120 members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 770 went on strike May 5 after nine months without a contract. The next day, Zacky told them they would be permanently replaced if they did not return to work by Monday. However, instead of replacing the strikers, Zacky staffed the plant with managers and temporary workers and opened negotiations with the UFCW through federal mediators. Unless it receives a satisfactory offer from Zacky, the UFCW said, it will expand the strike to the El Monte distribution center, which could interrupt chicken shipments to supermarkets.
