Except for Empire League, Baseball Playoff Races Unsettled

Only in the Empire League is there certainty about the high school baseball playoffs heading into the final regular-season games today and Friday.

With one game left, nine Orange County leagues have races for postseason play. The Empire League is set: El Dorado, Katella and Esperanza have locked up the three spots.

Here is the somewhat muddled picture:

DIVISION I

EMPIRE--Clinched: El Dorado (19-6, 11-3), Katella (16-8-1, 10-4), Esperanza (8-6, 13-11).

SOUTH COAST LEAGUE--Clinched: (Mater Dei (16-7-1, 11-3). Undecided: Capistrano Valley (16-8, 8-6), El Toro (16-9, 8-6), Dana Hills (13-11-1, 8-6) and San Clemente (14-10, 7-7) are in the running for two playoff spots, and numerous tiebreakers could be involved.

SUNSET LEAGUE--Clinched: Fountain Valley (22-2-1, 10-2-1). Undecided: Servite (14-9, 8-5), Huntington Beach (17-9, 7-6), Marina (17-9, 7-6), Edison (15-7-1, 6-6-1), Ocean View (13-11, 6-7) and Westminster (13-12, 6-7) are competing for two playoff spots, which could be determined by several tiebreaker rules.

DIVISION II

CENTURY--Clinched: Canyon (19-5, 12-2), Villa Park (15-9, 9-5). Undecided: Foothill (11-13, 7-7) qualifies if it beats El Modena. Orange (14-10, 7-7) qualifies if it beats Santa Ana Valley and Foothill loses.

FREEWAY--Clinched: Fullerton (19-5, 11-3), Sunny Hills (12-12-1, 8-6). Undecided: Troy (14-9, 7-7) qualifies if it beats Sunny Hills. Buena Park (11-11, 7-7) qualifies if it wins and Troy loses.

ORANGE--Clinched: Brea-Olinda (20-3, 10-3), Valencia (11-11, 10-3). Undecided: If Savanna (9-14, 6-7) and Magnolia (9-11, 6-7) finish tied, Savanna qualifies.

DIVISION III

GARDEN GROVE--Clinched: La Quinta (22-3, 13-0), Kennedy (17-8, 9-3). Undecided: The winner of Friday’s game between Garden Grove (13-9, 7-5) and Bolsa Grande (11-11, 7-6) qualifies.

PACIFIC COAST--Clinched: Trabuco Hills (18-6, 13-1), Century (16-7, 9-5). Undecided: If Estancia (12-12, 8-6) and Laguna Hills (12-12, 7-7) finish tied, Laguna Hills qualifies.

SEA VIEW LEAGUE--Clinched: Tustin (20-5, 12-1). Undecided: Corona del Mar (17-7, 8-5), Woodbridge (11-14, 8-5), Santa Margarita (12-11, 8-5), Saddleback (13-11, 7-6) and Irvine (14-12, 7-6) are competing for two playoff spots with multiple scenarios possible.

DIVISION V

OLYMPIC--Clinched: Whittier Christian (15-8, 11-1), Cerritos Valley Christian (12-5, 8-3). Undecided: If Calvary Chapel (15-8, 7-4) and Orange Lutheran (10-13, 6-5) finish tied, they will have a playoff game Saturday.
