HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Sanchez Stays Hot, Pitches One-Hitter

Channel Islands High pitcher Rene Sanchez pitched a one-hitter Wednesday to defeat Royal, 1-0, clinching third place for the Raiders in the Marmonte League and a berth in next week’s Southern Section Division I playoffs.

Sanchez (5-2) struck out seven and faced only 23 batters--two over the minimum. The senior right hander is 3-0 in his last four starts and has allowed only nine hits and two earned runs and struck out 24 batters in that span.

Royal’s only hit was a second-inning triple by Shawn Fossen. Sanchez shut down the Highlanders (14-9, 7-6 in league play) the rest of the way to eliminate them from playoff contention.

Sanchez had to be almost perfect for Channel Islands (16-9, 8-5), which garnered only two hits against Maki Kramer (8-1).

Thousand Oaks 3, Newbury Park 1--Lancer left hander Brian Downing threw a six-hitter at Newbury Park to hand the Panthers a rare Marmonte League defeat.

Second baseman Jason Earles scored a run in the fifth inning to give Thousand Oaks (12-11, 5-8) a 2-0 lead. Earles drove in Jason Bazo in the seventh to add an insurance run.

Keith Smith (6-3) took the loss for Newbury Park (18-6, 11-2). Downing improved to 4-5.

Simi Valley 13, Agoura 10--Ryan Hankins had two homers and drove in four runs as the Pioneers clinched a playoff berth in a Marmonte League game.

Simi Valley rebounded from an 8-1 deficit in the second inning to score seven runs in the fourth and five in the seventh. Jeff Michael drove in five runs for the Pioneers (17-6, 9-4).

Camarillo 4, Westlake 0--Thomas Taketa pitched a seven-hitter to lead the Scorpions (11-12, 6-7) in a Marmonte League game at Westlake (13-13, 4-9).

Chris Flanagan (6-5) took the loss for Warriors.

Alemany 2, Bishop Montgomery 1--Indian Greg Kmet pitched a two-hitter and Bill Scott singled home Robbie Glenn with the winning run in the sixth inning of the Mission League game at Bishop Montgomery.

Alemany (19-7, 10-3) clinched second place in the league with the victory.

Kmet (7-2) retired the final seven batters and had five strikeouts.

Notre Dame 8, Harvard-Westlake 0--Rich Igou (9-2) had three hits and two runs batted in, and also pitched a three-hitter over six innings, striking out 10 as Notre Dame clinched at least a share of the Mission League title.

Joey Orlando had three hits and Jabbar Craigwell added two hits and two RBIs for Notre Dame (17-5, 11-2).

Bell-Jeff 10, Cantwell 2--John Pawlik pitched tossed a three-hitter and struck out eight, including the side in the first two innings, as Bell-Jeff won for the sixth time in seven games in a Camino Real League game.

Village Christian 9, Marshall Fundamental 2--Crusaders David Gustafson and Jason Robitaille each drove in two runs in an Alpha League game at Marshall Fundamental.

Brandon Mitchell (5-0) struck out eight and pitched a five-hitter for Village Christian (15-7, 6-5).

Sylmar 11, Grant 2--Hiram Damwijk had three hits, including a triple, and two RBIs as Sylmar clinched at least a share of the East Valley League title in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Grant.

Art Diaz and Carlos Velazco each added two hits and two RBIs for Sylmar (23-3, 14-0), and Velazco (10-1) got the victory, allowing three hits over five innings and facing only 17 batters--two over the minimum.

Canoga Park 10, Monroe 7-- Canoga Park rallied from a 6-2 third-inning deficit, scoring three runs in the ninth in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Monroe.

Gus Lomeli, who slugged a two-run home run in the first, had three hits and three RBIs for Canoga Park (6-8 in league play). John Carlsen pitched the final two innings for the Hunters, allowing one hit while striking out two, to get the victory.

Birmingham 14, Van Nuys 7--John Ransom went four for five and drove in three runs--including two hits and two RBIs in an eight-run first inning--for Birmingham (11-13, 7-7) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game.

Juan Marentes (1-1) earned his first varsity victory, allowing one hit in 2 1/3 innings of relief work.

Poly 21, North Hollywood 2--Ray Montenegro had three hits, including a triple, and drove in three runs for Poly (19-4, 11-3), which scored 11 times in the sixth inning of the Valley Pac-8 Conference game.

Paul Cespedes was three for four with three RBIs, while Jaime Cerna scored four times and had two hits, including his first home run.

Franklin 5, Verdugo Hills 1--Franklin scored four runs--three of them unearned--in the fourth inning of the Northern Conference game at Franklin.

Panther pitcher Rick Catano was one out away from a no-hitter when Jeff Martin singled in the seventh to drive home Eric Schmidt, who walked.

SOFTBALL

Alemany 10, Harvard-Westlake 0--A two-out sixth inning single was all that stood between Sophie Contreraz and a no-hitter for the Indians (19-2, 11-0), who clinched first place in the Mission League with the six-inning victory.

Junior Tammy Alcantar singled, doubled and tripled in four appearances, scoring twice and driving in two runs, while junior Esmerelda Macias established a school season record of 55 hits with a fourth-inning single.

Montclair Prep 9, L.A. Lutheran 3--Mounties Kadihaj Swinton and Tami Freedman each went two for two with two runs batted in a nonleague game at Montclair Prep (15-3).

Brandi Cohen (9-3) threw a five-hitter and struck out six to earn the victory.

Notre Dame 3, Bishop Montgomery 1--Amy Goad (8-3) scattered five hits and struck out six, and Michele Lucente had three hits, drove in a run and scored one for Notre Dame in a Mission League game.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Camarillo d. Nordhoff, 15-7, 15-8, 15-10--Brian Isleib set a school record for kills in a game, spiking 11 of his match-high 20 in the third game as Camarillo won a Southern Section Division II wild-card match. Wayne Anderson had 33 assists for the Scorpions.
