2 Sisters Hurt When Struck by Van While Walking to School

Two sisters were injured, one seriously, while walking to school Wednesday morning when a van swerved onto a sidewalk after being hit by a car, authorities said.

Josepha and Roberta Miranda were on their way to Lathrop Intermediate School in the 1100 block of South Broadway about 8:15 a.m. They were near Standard and Edinger avenues when the accident occurred, according to Sgt. Dick Faust.

A man driving a Buick Regal pulled out of a convenience store parking lot in the 1500 block of Standard as a Ford Aerostar van driven by a Santa Ana woman was heading south on Standard, according to the accident report.

The woman told police the right rear of her vehicle was hit by the Buick, causing her to lose control and swerve onto the sidewalk, hitting the two girls.

Authorities said the driver of the Buick left the scene but was found later in Yorba Linda by Brea police, who returned him to Santa Ana for questioning.

Neither he nor the driver who hit the girls was cited, but Faust said charges could be filed in the case at any time and that an investigation was continuing.

Josepha, 12, an eighth-grader, broke her right leg and pelvis and had numerous cuts and internal injuries. Officials at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana said she was in guarded condition.

Roberta, 11, a sixth-grader, suffered cuts and scrapes and was released from the hospital after 4 p.m.

Lisa Hinshaw, an assistant principal at Lathrop, said she was taking get-well cards from the sisters’ classmates to the hospital.
