LOS ANGELES : No Charges Filed Against Man in Gun Tragedy

County prosecutors declined to file charges against the grandfather of a 6-year-old Korean boy who accidentally shot his mother in the head with the man’s gun.
Yun Taik Chung, 70, was asleep in front of the television in his Koreatown apartment, wearing his uniform and gun for his job as a security guard.
The boy took the .22-caliber semiautomatic handgun from his grandfather’s waistband without anyone noticing and accidentally shot his mother, Hyang Ja Jung, in the head. Police presented a report on the shooting to the district attorney’s office for possible prosecution. But Deputy Dist. Atty. Sheldon Levitin found that Chung was not criminally liable because he had the firearm on his person.
By law, an adult who keeps a loaded gun where a child can easily get it can be prosecuted for negligence.
