United Parcel Settles Bar Code Suit: Omniplanar Inc. said the big package delivery firm paid it an undisclosed sum after a jury found that UPS misappropriated the electronics research and development company’s trade secrets. Omniplanar, based in Princeton, N.J., filed suit in federal court in September, 1991, alleging that UPS misappropriated its now-patented MaxiCode bar coding technology the year before. The firm’s labels hold about 10 times more data than a conventional bar code in the same space.
