Led by Dave Keller’s 24 kills, Orange Coast beat stubborn Pierce College, 16-14, 17-15, 15-13, Saturday at Santa Barbara City College to become the State men’s volleyball champion.
Keller, along with Lance Perry (16 kills), proved to be the Pirates’ primary offensive weapon. He kept the pressure on Pierce, which beat Orange Coast the last two times.
Perry was named most valuable player of the match and teammates Jason Crone and Mike Melcher made the all-tournament team. Gabe Higa led Pierce with 22 kills.
Orange Coast regains the championship after losing it in 1991. The Pirates finish the season 17-3. Pierce College ends its season 18-1.
