Corona del Mar upset eighth-ranked Newport Harbor in five games Thursday, helping the Sea Kings earn a share of the Sea View League boys’ volleyball title.
Brooks Hoppe had 26 kills and Brad Callahan added 12 to lead the Sea Kings to a 3-15, 15-4, 15-8, 11-15, 15-6 victory at Newport Harbor High.
Corona del Mar (14-2, 12-2 in league) lost to Newport Harbor in four games during their first match, so Newport Harbor will be the league’s top-seeded team for the Southern Section playoffs, which begin May 13.
Although Mitch McCoy had a match-high 28 kills for Newport Harbor (13-4, 12-2), the Sailors were sluggish after an easy 15-3 victory in Game 1.
In Game 2, Hoppe and Brian Coleman had three kills each to help Corona del Mar take an 11-1 lead. In Game 3, Hoppe and McCoy had eight kills each, but the Sea Kings won eight of the last 10 points to take a two-games-to-one lead.
McCoy’s jump serve helped the Sailors win five consecutive points to take an 11-8 lead in Game 4. Newport Harbor won to force a fifth game.
But the Sea Kings took a 10-3 lead in Game 5 and closed out the match with three points on three consecutive Newport Harbor errors.
