GOLF : Kite, Sutton Tied for Lead

MARIETTA, Ga. — A two-shot swing on the final hole Thursday left Tom Kite and Hal Sutton tied for the lead at six-under-par 66 in the first round of the $1.2-million BellSouth Classic.

Kite, the 1992 U.S. Open champion and winner of this event the same year, rolled in a five-foot birdie putt and Sutton, winless since the 1986 Memorial, had his only bogey of the day after he missed the ninth green.

Both Kite and Sutton began play on the hilly, 7,018-yard Atlanta Country Club course on No. 10.

They held their one-shot lead over Craig Parry, whose bogey-free round featured birdie putts of 30 feet on No. 4 and 20 feet on No. 13.

Seven others were at 68--Lennie Clements, Paul Goydos, Corey Pavin, Brian Henninger, Mark Wurtz, Esteban Toledo and Wayne Levi, a two-time Atlanta winner.
