Luggage System Lagging in Denver

DENVER — A computerized baggage system that’s supposed to whisk luggage from one flight to another at the new Denver International Airport is performing so poorly its maker said the airport’s opening may have to be postponed for the fourth time.
“It certainly wasn’t a success,” Gene Di Fonso, vice president of BAE Automated System Inc., said Thursday after a daylong test of the $193-million system. “A failure? Yeah, maybe.”
“Without declaring defeat we need to be intellectually honest about what we saw in today’s testing: The May 15 opening is in serious doubt,” he said.
The $3.2-billion airport was supposed to open Oct. 31, but that was postponed to Dec. 19 and then to March 9 because of construction and training delays.
Mayor Wellington Webb blamed the baggage system when he postponed the opening again to May 15. TV screens showing flight information and about 25 security doors were not ready for the March opening either.
