PREP SOFTBALL ROUNDUP : St. Margaret’s Scores Early and Often in 39-0 Victory

St. Margaret’s scored 12 runs in the first inning and 16 in the fourth and defeated visiting South Gate Southeast Lutheran, 39-0, Friday in an Academy League softball game stopped in the fifth inning because of the mercy rule.
The 39 runs in the second-most scored in a game by an Orange County team, according to the Southern Section record book. Whittier Christian’s 60 in a victory over Bethel Christian in 1978 is the section and county record.
Monica Arreola pitched a perfect game, and Monica Girard hit two home runs, including a grand slam, for St. Margaret’s (7-2, 3-0 in league), which had 19 hits. The Tartans, who scored six in the seventh and five in the third, didn’t bat in the fifth.
In another Academy League game:
Liberty Christian 11, Connelly 5--Lynlee Vaccaro had two hits and three RBIs for Liberty Christian (8-5, 2-1).
In the Express League:
Heritage Christian 15, Bethel Christian 1 (5, mercy)--Sheri Larson homered, tripled and doubled and had seven RBIs for Heritage Christian (7-5, 4-3). Larson (3-0) pitched a one-hitter, striking out nine.
In the Sea View League:
University 12, Corona del Mar 4--Jackie Shammas was three for four with two runs scored and Kari Rowberg was three for four with two RBIs for host University (9-8, 6-2).
Irvine 14, Newport Harbor 0 (5, mercy)--Shye Nakabayashi had three hits and Natalie Tomoguchi had three RBIs for host Irvine (11-9, 5-3).
Tustin 2, Saddleback 0--Sarah Davis had two hits, including a home run in fourth, for Tustin (8-4, 6-2).
Woodbridge 1, Santa Margarita 0 (9)--Jackie Sukiasian pitched a two-hit shutout and scored the winning run on a single by Michelle Hague for Woodbridge (16-6, 7-1). Alison Johnsen stole three bases and had three hits for the Warriors.
In the South Coast League:
Capistrano Valley 7, Dana Hills 0--Jodi Wayland had two doubles and one RBI, and Stacy Henderson was three for three with an RBI for host Capistrano Valley (12-5, 3-1).
Mater Dei 8, Mission Viejo 0--Patty Godwin had three hits and pitched a four-hitter for her fifth shutout for visiting Mater Dei (15-3, 4-0), ranked fifth in Orange County.
El Toro 2, San Clemente 1--Dana Gulick singled in the winning run in the top of the fifth for El Toro (15-8, 3-1). Kelli Bruce added two hits and a stolen base and Kim Martin scored twice for the the Chargers.
