Val Verde Story Brought Back Good Memories

* This letter is in reference to the article, “Val Verde--A Forgotten Oasis of Freedom” (March 2). I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for Jocelyn Y. Stewart’s presenting such a positive image of Val Verde and African Americans.
Many avenues have opened for me and the African American community because of Ms. Stewart’s efforts. A representative from the Cable News Network read the article and featured Val Verde on March 6. I, along with Val Verde friends, appeared on national television.
The article rekindled precious memories within the African American community. I have received about 30 calls from friends that I met in Val Verde, including one that I had not spoken with in 30 years. The response that I received from the African American community was overwhelming. I also received calls from friends throughout the country after the CNN special.
Thanks to all of the members of the Los Angeles Times Valley Edition’s staff who contributed to this article.
