NEWPORT BEACH — A 22-month-old boy died Friday at Hoag Hospital, where he had been admitted with injuries for the second time in a weeks. His mother’s boyfriend was arrested, police said.
Brian Laudenback, 32, of Newport Beach was booked on suspicion of corporal punishment or injury to a child, according to Sgt. Andy Gonis, and held on $10,000 bail. More serious charges may be filed following an autopsy, he said.
The child, Tyler Jaeger, had been admitted to Hoag Hospital March 18 with a fractured skull, according to Gonis.
Hospital officials were told at the time that the infant’s head injury was caused by an accidental fall, Gonis said, and because the injuries were consistent with such an injury, the baby was released two days later to the custody of his mother, Karey Jaeger.
The baby was returned to the Hoag emergency room at 10.45 a.m. Friday by Laudenback, but could not be revived and was pronounced dead.
Because of bruising on the child, police were called and both Laudenback and Jaeger, who live together, were questioned.
Karey Jaeger was released without charge, Gonis said.
