KIEV : Elections in Ukraine

Ukrainians will go to the polls Sunday for their first elections since independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. More than 3,600 candidates will contest 450 seats in the Rada, Ukraine’s Parliament.
Among the competitors are the Communist Party, powered by ethnic Russian industrial managers from the eastern Ukrainian rust belt; Rukh, the movement that agitated for independence before the disintegration of the Soviet Union, and nationalists who are up in arms over a separatist movement in the Russian-dominated Crimea.
If President Leonid M. Kravchuk finds himself with a Rada dominated by Communist or nationalist forces, he will likely be forced to face presidential elections in June.
