Sgt. Dan Strand of the Champaign, Ill., police called to say that everyone back there was still rallying behind Bonnie Blair, the hometown speedskater who won her sixth Olympic medal.
Champaign cops sponsored Blair before she became such a big success.
“We just passed out 5,000 new ‘Go for the Gold ‘94’ badges here in town,” Strand said. “George Bush held up our ‘Bonnie ‘92’ shirt during the campaign, so now I’ve got a Secret Service buddy giving one to President Clinton. Maybe he’ll wear it while he jogs.”
