NHL ROUNDUP : Loss Ends Rangers’ Long Day

A long day on the road, a long night at the rink and another loss left the New York Rangers frustrated.

Eric Desjardins scored 1:27 into overtime and the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Rangers, 4-3, Wednesday night for their sixth victory in a row.

Because a blizzard in New York closed the airports, the Rangers rode a bus to Montreal. The trip took eight hours or, as defenseman Doug Lidster described, “three and half movies, a McDonald’s and a Boston Chicken.”

Montreal used power-play goals from Mathieu Schneider and Gilbert Dionne late in the second period to erase a 3-1 deficit and set up the overtime, which seemed to make a bad day complete.

Dallas 4, Winnipeg 2--Mike Modano scored the go-ahead goal at 6:02 of the third period at Dallas, where the Stars extended Winnipeg’s winless streak to 11 games (0-9-2).

Modano’s 32nd goal of the season gave the Stars a 2-1 lead and sent them to their fifth victory in six games.

Calgary 6, Edmonton 1--Robert Reichel scored two goals at Edmonton and the Flames won their fourth in a row.

Reichel has 14 goals in his last 12 games, and 27 for the season.

The Flames built a 5-0 lead, scoring three consecutive power-play goals.
