Nation IN BRIEF : SOUTH CAROLINA : Clintons Arrive for Renaissance Weekend
- Share via
President Clinton and his family flew to Hilton Head, S.C., where they’ll meet with the elite from the worlds of politics, business and education. The Clintons’ stay at the resort is built around Renaissance Weekend, a regular New Year’s activity for the Clintons. Some 335 families are taking part this year. The retreat was started in 1981 by White House Deputy Chief of Staff Phil Lader, a onetime real estate developer on the island. The guests’ discussions are strictly off the record. The President, his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and daughter, Chelsea, arrived on the island after a three-day stay in Arkansas, where they had visited with family and friends.
