A Lack of Love Contributes to Crime

In response to Paul Dean’s column on crime and fear in L.A. (“I Don’t Know What to Do to Stay Alive,” Nov. 29): The cause of the problem is plain and clear. We simply do not love our children and do not provide for them.
Budget cuts for school programs (music, art) and pay raises for lax city officials (banquets, travel) can only reassure children in overcrowded schools with underpaid, uninterested teachers that they are definitely not a priority.
These kids will undoubtedly turn to gangs and crime for belonging and a sense of worth.
