While others wander the far-flung corners of the planet, Bernward Thorsch of Tarzana would rather spend his time on local trails. “While on a hiking trip to Bishop this fall,” he writes, “I strayed off the path and came upon this scene, with the eastern Sierra rising up 13,000 feet in the background. So many people travel all over the world in search of beautiful sights and here, we have this, in our own backyard. I call this scene, ‘Peaceful.’ ”
