SACRAMENTO — Crime victims and their advocates appealed Wednesday to Gov. Pete Wilson to immediately find funds to overcome a $45-million shortfall in the state program that compensates crime victims.
A spokeswoman for the governor said that although Wilson “doesn’t want to see victims suffer” further, he cannot provide the funds without legislative approval.
Representatives of service providers and crime victims told a news conference that $45 million worth of claims have been approved this year but have not been paid because of the shortage of funds.
