Burglars using a chunk of concrete wrapped in a paper bag smashed a store window and stole five small bronze sculptures Monday night, authorities said.
Police responded to a silent alarm at the Pasadena Coin Co. shop on Colorado Boulevard about 10 p.m., Detective John Thomas said. There have been no arrests.
The shop is run by Arcadia artist T. K. Heller, 36, and her husband, Henri, 70. T. K. Heller said the uninsured pieces, which were artist’s originals for display only, had a total value of about $11,000. The pieces, each about a foot tall, included busts of bulls and ponies with painted details.
One piece, a 10-inch-by-15-inch longhorn bull, had Henri Heller’s initials carved into it.
“It was one I’d done for my husband,” T. K. Heller said. “He’s crushed.”
The artist, who has displayed her work throughout Southern California and in Europe, speculated the display was specifically targeted.
Thomas said police are distributing photographs of the stolen pieces to businesses in case the thieves try to sell them.
