GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Philman Scores 41, Edison Beats Cerritos

Sophomore Marie Philman scored 41 points, including six in overtime, and pulled down 19 rebounds as Edison beat Cerritos, 69-63, in the second round of the Cypress girls’ basketball tournament Tuesday.

Edison outscored Cerritos, 21-9, in the fourth quarter to force a 58-58 tie at the end of regulation. Philman, a forward, scored the tying basket to send the game in overtime with 25 seconds left. Philman, who scored 18 points in the fourth quarter and overtime, is averaging 34 points and 13.2 rebounds.

Lisa Araki scored 12 points for the Chargers.

In other Cypress tournament games:

Woodbridge 51, Marina 47--Jamie Oenning scored 14 points and Angela Burgess had 12 points and 12 rebounds for Woodbridge (5-0), which plays Edison in one semifinal Thursday. Woodbridge took its first lead, 44-42, with about five minutes left when Marina had to play with four players. Shandy Robbins was called for her fifth foul and left the court. But the officials, unaware of the foul out, put the ball into play before Marina could insert another player.

Cypress 60, Costa Mesa 43--Jessica Eggleston scored 34 points on 15 of 21 shooting for Cypress (8-1).

In the Estancia tournament:

Corona del Mar 48, St. Paul 47--Rosalie Kane made two free throws with two seconds left to lift Corona del Mar (3-1). Kane finished the game with 20 points and 16 rebounds.

Irvine 54, Laguna Beach 27--Shawnee Stevens scored 19 points and Meaghan Woodruff scored 13 for Irvine (3-1).

In the Bolsa Grande tournament:

Westminster 57, Santa Ana Valley 33--Kristin Schult scored 12 points and Amber Farroux added 11 points for Westminster (3-2).

Tustin 63, Montebello Cantwell 42--Sarah Davis scored 19 points with nine assists and nine steals to lead Tustin (3-2).
