Snowfall in Antelope Valley Catches Residents by Surprise

A rapidly moving cold front swept through the Antelope Valley on Tuesday evening, dropping about one-fourth of an inch of snow on unsuspecting motorists and residents of the surrounding mountains, authorities said.

“We didn’t expect the system to make it this far down, but in the last 12 hours it really developed and dipped farther south than we expected,” said David Gomberg, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Westwood.

Deputies at the Antelope Valley station of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported several weather-related traffic accidents as residents from Agua Dulce to Acton to Lake Los Angeles reported light snowfall, deputies said. The snowfall lasted for about 2 1/2 hours, Gomberg said.

With winds gusting from 15 to 20 m.p.h., and temperatures expected to range from the mid-30s to low 40s Tuesday night, Gomberg estimated the windchill factors would dip to about 15 degrees.

Temperatures in the Antelope Valley today will range from overnight lows of 25 to 30 degrees to highs in the 40s to low 50s, he said.

Rain also fell in the San Fernando Valley, with 0.16 of an inch drizzling down on Woodland Hills, Gomberg said.

San Fernando Valley temperatures Tuesday ranged from the low 40s to the mid- or upper 50s, with a high of 60 degrees and an overnight low in the high 30s, he said.
