NEWPORT BEACH : 2 Top City Officials Decline Salary Raise
- Share via
Two top city officials have declined a salary raise in the interest of saving money for the financially troubled city.
City Manager Kevin J. Murphy, who has an annual salary of $131,664, and City Atty. Robert Burnham, whose salary is $116,675, decided not to accept raises scheduled for 1994, approved by the City Council last month.
Last year, the city had to cut its budget by $3 million, privatized some services and raised its hotel bed tax, business license fees and other fees. Murphy said the 1994 budget cycle will include further cutbacks and belt-tightening.
Most city employees have not received a salary increase since 1991. But on Jan. 1, employees, minus Murphy and Burnham, will get a 3% salary increase. Murphy and Burnham were to receive an additional 5% increase in April.
