Winning Has Become a Habit for Los Alamitos and Irvine

For the third consecutive season, Los Alamitos and Irvine won Southern Section football championships Saturday.
The three-peats for the Griffins and Vaqueros marked the first time any Orange County team has won three consecutive football championships since Brea-Olinda won Lower Division titles in 1961, ’62 and ’63.
Mike Good completed 21 of 32 passes for 403 yards and four touchdowns to lead Los Alamitos to a 39-21 victory over Huntington Beach in the Division II championship game.
Irvine’s Tony Mathis rushed for 107 yards and two touchdowns in 13 carries and the Vaqueros’ defense held Moreno Valley Canyon Springs to 79 yards rushing in a 41-14 victory in the Division IV title game.
Savanna won its first football championship in the school’s 33-year history, as Paul Waldrop passed for 191 yards and a touchdown to lead the Rebels to a 20-13 victory over Whittier in the Division VI title game.
In Division VIII, Trabuco Hills won its third title since 1988 as Jake Galasso rushed for 152 yards and three touchdowns in a 44-6 victory over Costa Mesa.
Friday, Rialto Eisenhower defeated Mater Dei, 56-3, to win the Division I title in the second-most lopsided championship victory in Southern Section history. Edison defeated Redlands, 55-0, in the 1979 title game.
Rancho Alamitos reached the Division VII title game for the second consecutive season, but lost to Manhattan Beach Mira Costa, 29-17. North Hills L.A. Baptist scored 27 second-quarter points to pace a 43-21 victory over Brethren Christian in the Division X title game.
