Stich Reaches Semifinals of Grand Slam Cup

Defending champion Michael Stich came from behind and beat Brett Steven on Thursday, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, advancing to the semifinals of the Grand Slam Cup in Munich, Germany.
Stich, No. 2 in the world, now has won $431,250 in tennis’ richest tournament that invites 16 players with the best records in the year’s four Grand Slam tournaments.
By reaching the quarterfinals, Steven earned $262,500 and nearly doubled his 1993 earnings. His total career earnings had been $438,497, including $102,140 in 1992.
In other quarterfinal action, Stefan Edberg defeated Wayne Ferreira, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-0.
Basketball
University of California forward Alfred Grigsby, who missed the Golden Bears’ first two games with a knee injury, will be out at least two weeks with a strained left hamstring.
Baseball
Baseball players, tired of waiting for owners to make a collective bargaining proposal, said at their annual meetings at Scottsdale, Ariz., that they will present their own plan within two months.
Miscellany
There will be no general admission tickets sold for next summer’s Brickyard 400 stock-car race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, only reserved seats.
