Coach: Tino Ray Younger (fourth year).
1992-93: 16-5-3, 6-2-2 in the Century League; lost to eventual champion Arcadia, 2-0, in the quarterfinals of the Division II playoffs.
Key returners: Kristi Hales, Sr., forward, first-team all-league; Amy Moreno, Sr., goalie, first-team all-league; Jennifer Porter, Sr., defender, first-team all-league; Erin Warren, Jr., defender; Kaylee Whitfield, So., forward; Laurie Zemke, So., defender.
Key newcomers: Aja Cordova, So., forward; Gina Mandel, Jr., midfielder; Jennifer Nelson, Jr., midfielder; Jill Templin, So., defender; Nicole Terry, So., midfielder.
Outlook: For two consecutive seasons the Vanguards have finished second to Canyon in league. This could be the season to break out of the rut. Canyon, having lost seven starters, is vulnerable, and El Modena appears to be stronger than ever. Hales, the leading scorer with 13 goals and 11 assists, and Whitfield (11 goals, 10 assists) will provide the offense. Moreno allowed only 11 goals last season, and Porter moves to sweeper from halfback to bolster the defense. “With her there, all our defensive questions are answered,” Younger said.
